Electric kettles
Modern kettle or traditional-style designs, electric kettles are the norm in most kitchens. Choose from a variety of finishes including toughened glass, plastic, brushed stainless steel and chrome.
Non-electric kettles
If you’ve got the option of heating water on the stove, this is an appealing option. Slower from cold than electric kettles but definitely worth considering if you have a country-style kitchen. Most come with an essential whistle to let you know when the water has boiled.

Whatever the design, there are two main factors you need to consider before buying.
Noise
Generally, the more powerful the kettle, the quicker it is to boil – but the higher the price, too. Also, kettles with a higher wattage tend to be much noisier. If having a quiet kettle is important to you, look for models approved by the Quiet Mark. Don’t just take the manufacturer’s word for it.
Capacity
Typically, kettles can hold between 1.5 and 1.7 litres of water. An average large cup is 250ml, so should be able to boil 6-7 cupfuls at a time. Check the minimum capacity (should be around 250ml), so you don’t boil more than you need and you save on your energy bill. Smaller kettles, like travel and mini kettles, are great for holidays or if you live alone.
